Denis Villeneuve would love to return to the world of Blade Runner. In an interview with Empire, the director behind the 2017’s terrific Blade Runner 2049 expressed interest in creating a new story in Blade Runner‘s continuity.

“It’s such an inspiring place, the Blade Runner world,” Villeneuve said to Empire. “The problem is have is the word ‘sequel’. I think cinema needs original stories. But if you ask me if I’d like to revisit this universe in a different way, I can say yes. It would need to be a project on its own. Something disconnected from both other movies. A detective noir story set in the future… I wake up sometimes in the night dreaming about it.”

As a fan of Villeneuve’s work, I hope he gets another opportunity to make a Blade Runner story. While Blade Runner 2049 was a misfire at the box office, the film ranks as one of the greatest science fiction movies in recent memory, and a new Villeneuve directed Blade Runner experience would probably be great. My fingers are crossed.
