The Deftones’ next album is one of the most anticipated releases of 2020, but the wait for the LP may be longer than we think. In an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe (via Revolver), Deftones frontman Chino Moreno originally planned for the band’s 9th LP to release Summer 2020 sometime, but right now, that hope may not come to fruition. It’s nearly impossible to promote a new album via a tour during the coronavirus crisis, and Moreno, and the rest of Deftones by extension, are cognizant of this new reality.
“We haven’t really discussed [a release date] too deeply other than we plan on [the 9th album] coming out this summer,” Moreno said to Apple Music. “It’s not looking like we’re going to be able to get out there this summer and support [the 9th album]. So does it make sense to put it out when you can’t support it? Maybe. Maybe not. I don’t know. I think that’s something we’re going to have to figure out sooner than later. But I think our mindset right now is just finishing [the 9th album] completely and making sure that it’s great. And then taking it from there.”
This is an understandable predicament. While I’d love to have a new Deftones album in my hands sooner rather than later, releasing an album amid the coronavirus outbreak might not make sense business-wise. Let’s hope the wait won’t be too long either way, but until then, we can jam to Deftones’ previous album Gore which is fantastic.
