The new era for DC films and Superman is nearly here.
With James Gunn now in the director’s chair rather than the polarizing Zack Snyder and kick starting a new DC film continuity with the upcoming Superman film, I’m onboard for a more hopeful and fun Superman (something that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was most definitely not) and a movie that still knows how to take its narrative stakes with sincerity. A balance that James Gunn has excelled at with the Guardians of The Galaxy franchise, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker.
I’m ready for silly antics, fun ideas, and wholesome design choices like Superman wearing his iconic red underoos, Krypto the Superdog being the goodest of good boys, and Nathan Fillion as a Green Lantern with a very punchable mug (this is a strength in and of itself). I’m also game for a Superman narrative that extends beyond a Jesus/god metaphor and is more about Clark Kent’s humanity. Something that was underutilized in the Zack Snyder films.
And judging by this trailer, James Gunn appears to have accomplished this goal. The new Superman looks to fulfill both of the necessary quotas for fun and emotional fulfillment that this beloved yet misunderstood franchise truly requires. It’s truly a very exciting time to be a fan of Superman. Superman releases on July 11, 2025.
