Capcom Wants To Revitalize Old yet Beloved Game Franchises

Capcom is diving back into their treasure trove of beloved IP. In a corporate and investor relations memo publicly available on Capcom’s website, the famed Japanese gaming company behind Resident Evil and Monster Hunter franchises detailed their plans to revitalize games and properties in their portfolio. Titles that have been underutilized.

Per the post: “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further enhance corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, which includes reviving past IPs like the two titles announced above, in order to continuously produce highly efficient, high-quality titles.”

Admittedly, Capcom is already living up to its promise. They released Dragon’s Dogma 2 and Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster earlier in 2024, and at The Game Awards, they announced sequels to both Okami and Onimusha. Games that haven’t had new installments in years, if not decades.

Yet Capcom informing us of its current strategy is welcome news. In an era where AAA publishers create fewer and fewer games and let beloved IP rot in favor of chasing the unsustainable live service (Dead service?) gold rush, it’s heartening that a big budget publisher finally sees the value of the IP they are currently sitting on. Especially given that most major publishers (*cough Sony *cough) own multiple well respected game franchises yet are sitting on those said series.

Hopefully, this inspires more publishers to follow Capcom’s lead. The industry really needs to embrace its IP and history. Just like Capcom has.
